After The Show: Caring For Your
Vehicle At Home
Completing the vehicle’s restoration is only the first step. Another
important aspect of vehicle ownership is the element of storage, care and
routine maintenance. Following these simple guidelines will insure your
vehicle’s condition will remain above average and only preserve the
exceptional experience of being a classic car owner.
Storage BasicsImproper storage of a newly restored vehicle contributes to a large majority
of the continuing repairs performed on restored vehicles. Careful
preparation should be take to make sure your home or storage facility is
properly setup to house your restored vehicle.
- Indoor storage is always the best. Storing a restored vehicle
outdoors subjects it to the very elements that destroyed it in the first
place.
- All storage areas should carry low humidity with excellent
ventilation.
- Natural sunlight can damage your vehicle’s finish. Avoid open lit
areas.
- Research shows that new vehicle paint takes at least 6 months to
fully cure. Avoid placing any vehicle covers, performing any wax or
buffing or heavy cleaning until at least 6 months after paint
application.
- Avoid using a cover in damp climates. Instead invest in a storage
facility that is more climate controlled. Using a car cover in damp
weather triggers the rain effect where moisture collects underneath.
- Do not store your vehicle in a garage filled with un-secure items
which could fall, slide or drop.
- GPS alarm systems are a great idea. We recommend LoJack as it is the
only system monitored by the police department and can notify you if the
vehicle even leaves your home. The cost is under $1000.00.
- Remove all harsh chemicals from the intended storage area. Constant
exposure can destroy your vehicle’s finish.
- With 6 volt system cars, a trickle charger should be set up to
preserve your battery life.
- When storing a vehicle for extended periods of time, seek
professional help to prep the vehicle for storage. This is serious
folks, and can keep you from having to re-complete repairs down the
road.
